Photographing Fall Scenery

Since the glowing colors of fall scenery don't seem to last very long, you want to hurry and get out there to take pictures of those beautiful leaves of fiery crimson, golden mandarin, deep burgundy, and forest green. Take time to travel to places where you can photograph trees and other fall scenery, like pumpkin patches. You might have to hike up into the forest to get some close up shots of the trees. Get the birds-eye view. A fresh stream of water winding through a patch of trees would be another beautiful scene to capture.

After you've chosen the location, decide on the best time to take the pictures. Will the location look the best at sunrise or sunset? Take advantage of the time you have and take plenty of pictures. Take photos from several angles, frames and camera settings. Then, you can decide later which pictures to discard and which ones to print and place in the album.

If you want to go where the autumn colors are really vibrant, check out the fall foliage in South Dakota. South Dakota offers a number of colorful fall landscapes like the colorful aspen trees in the Black Hills and the brilliant oak, elm and ash at Sica Hollow. You could also check out the fall scenery at the McIntyre Brook on Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada. What could be more beautiful than a crystal-clear brook flowing over the rocks and winding through the colorful trees? There's nothing like the awesome colors of nature in the autumn!

Winter Scenery

If you are interested in experiencing winter scenery for a brief period of time, travel to the country of Scotland. It is truly majestic in winter and that is the perfect time to explore the beautiful capital city of Edinburgh. You will see that the stunning architecture and cityscape looks even more splendid when wrapped in "winter clothing." The silvery frost sparkling on the trees in Princes Street Gardens and the snow blanketing the streets give it the look of a fairy tale.

Of course, the winter scenery is also quite dramatic in Alaska. You can experience the white snow-capped mountains of the Alaska range, especially on Mount McKinley which is the tallest mountain in North America. You may not see as much snow in Anchorage, Alaska as you might see in Buffalo, N.Y., but it starts falling in October and stays on the ground until April. Valdez, on the south-central coast, is one of the snowiest places in Alaska. The snowfall is quite often measured in feet and that makes for some wonderful skiing competitions in the nearby mountains.

If you just want to look at winter scenery, go to the Internet to locate it in pictures, paintings, or photographs. If you are interested in obtaining the images of winter scenes for various projects such as wallpaper, Christmas decor, and computer screen savers then check out nvtech.com for clip art of winter scenes. They have quite a selection of downloadable media for your projects or to use in desktop publishing.

United States Monuments

There are about 100 monuments in the United States. Some of them include the Mount Saint Helens National Volcanic Monument, Rainbow Bridge National Monument, and the Buck Island Reef. The Mount Saint Helens National Volcanic Monument was started in 1982 and it has an area of 110,000 acres of land. This monument has a visitor center located near Silver Lake with a gift shop and a theater. There is also a Forest Learning Center, which has exhibits that show information on the history of this park. Another attraction at this monument is the Johnston Ridge Observatory, whose half mile long trail offers several interesting views of the volcano.

Rainbow Bridge National Monument resides in San Juan County, Utah, and has an area of one hundred and sixty acres. At 275 feet long, it is usually said to be the biggest natural bridge in the world. The stone that makes up this bridge was created during the Jurassic time period. Many Native Americans revered this bridge for hundreds of years and even today, Indian families still live near the place. There are many trail heads that can be gotten to by getting permission from the Navajo Indian people.

Buck Island Reef is an island located north of the Virgin Islands. It is 176 acres and has one of the three United States underwater trails. This monument was formed in 1961. The reef around the island is filled with coral, sharks, rays, turtles, and many other species of fish. Snorkelers and scuba divers can swim through the reef while enjoying the view of so many different animals.

Macro Photography

There are two types of photographers - professionals who make a living taking pictures, and people who take pictures as hobby. In either case, taking photography is fun, but it does require patience. Macro photography is a type of photography taken close-up (life size). The world of macro photography is the most exciting thing of all other hobbies or professions one can ever have.

For this, you would need a macro lens to do the job, or you can opt to purchase extension tubes. A single macro tube costs about $60, or a set of three for $150. You must at least start to learn about ratios and how it works. Ratios are the term used to describe the magnification of the camera’s macro lens.

Macro photography can be very tricky, because the closer you move to your object, the smaller the depth of the field would become. This is because the aperture becomes smaller as you move towards the object. So, it is recommended that you use the smallest aperture possible. Besides, using extension tubes, you would also need a tripod. This is to prevent the shaking during the taking of the photograph, especially when taking objects that are on the move such as animals and insects. There are just millions of things out in nature that you can’t possibly run out of taking, like a daffodil, wild flowers, bugs, bees, and other insects. Some insects look so strange, and after sending out some of these photographs to your friends, your friends might think your a professional.

Photographing Different Types of Scenery

Photographing different types of scenery will call for different tricks, techniques, and equipment to get the best shot. Most professional landscape photographers prefer working around sunrise and dusk because of the golden quality of the light and the rapid, subtle play of light and shadow as the angle of the light changes the visual texture. Timing and opportunity play a major role in great landscape photos.

Great opportunities are rarely going to be conveniently beside a road. You may have to do a bit of hiking to find the best spots from which to shoot. Use a map or, better yet, a GPS unit to mark the site so you can return to it later and to keep from getting lost. A tripod to minimize camera motion will help make photos look crisp and clean.

To take desert photos, work the golden hours. Unless the sky is overcast, which isn't common in desert landscapes, an overhead sun will wash out the colors and eliminate shadows, and the pictures will have a flat, two-dimensional appearance. Using filters can help tone down the light.

When photographing seascapes, try to bring out the character of the coastal scene, whether it's a calm, sparkling white beach or rugged, stormy coastline. Don’t load film or memory cards near water or spray, and protect your equipment by wiping it down with a damp chamois after use. There will be a lot of reflected light, so make use of polarizing, graduated, neutral-density, and light-balancing filters to eliminate glare while preserving color.

Mountains work well in long, panoramic shots, but a high vantage point can give you a commanding view. Use a camera that allows you to control the exposure settings; a small aperture will let you keep everything in focus.
