Tips for Photographing United States Monuments

Many times, we think of the best photography as beautiful scenes from nature, or a glamorous picture of a model. However, there are other subjects that make for awesome photography. The many famous monuments of the United States make great photograph subjects. Consider the difference between a monument and a normal sculpture. A sculpture usually is of a person or animal. In contrast, monuments commemorate certain events or a specific important figure of history. At times, there are actual battle re-enactments taking place around the monument that are of historic significance. Photographs of these help to make for a better understanding of history.

When taking a picture of an outdoor monument, the photographer should take the time of day into consideration. Having the sunlight fall in just the right way onto the monument makes for a great picture. Look for picture post cards or books that have pictures of the monument. The amateur photographer can get ideas from what the professional photographers has done in the past. If you want to photograph the monument indoors, you must get permission to do so first.

If you want to include people in your monument photograph, organize your thoughts as to why and who should be on the picture. A meaningful picture can be made of a lone character staring up at a gigantic memorial, or you may just want to get a picture of tourists visiting the monument. If there is beautiful landscape around the monument, focus the camera so that the trees, shrubs and/or flowers make a picturesque shape around the monument.
