If you are purchasing a digital camera for a beginner photographer or a person who doesn’t really want to mess with a lot of settings, a point and shoot ultra compact camera is the answer. These types do not have a lot of complex controls to learn and are small enough to fit in a pocket. The cost can be minimal as well. These digital cameras are usually $200 and under.

If the photographer is a bit more advanced and enjoys playing with pictures in different programs, or wants more camera features, a compact camera could be the right choice. These usually cost anywhere from $250 to $400. The optical zoom on compact cameras can zoom further. They also have more advanced features such as face recognition, different scene modes and the ability to adjust the ISO settings.

For the zealous photographer who wants the utmost in camera technology, the digital SLR camera is for them. These can go up to thousands of dollars in cost, but can have 10 or more megapixels compared to the 6 and under that the other cameras offer. They can also be semi-automatic or fully manual. The more advanced choice can be a bit more bulky, but there are many accessories for these great cameras. These are usually used by the more professional group and are the top of the line. They offer complete control over the photography.
