The History Of Scenic Photography

Photography came onto the scene in the early 1800s,and very soon after that photographers began the field of scenic photography. Scenic photography is used to capture bits of history, everything from nature photography to the growth of towns, and even the construction of structures. Scenic photography began as a nature subject simply because the exposure time was so long.

Photographers found that people loved the subject of nature and this helped to build the popularity of scenic photography. Landscape photos are some of the most popular types of scenic photography. This type of photography has also been used to record and document such things as the building of the Cairns Kuranda Railway Railroad in 1911. Scenic photography has been used to market the Cherokee Foothills to tourists and to record the construction of Mount Rushmore. Photographers like John S. Johnston helped to validate scenic photography. Back in the late 1800s, his work was found in many publications. In the late 1800s, the Burton Brothers of New Zealand helped to build interest in scenic photography and went on to build quite a name in their home country.

One of the most famous scenic photographers of all time was Ansel Adams. For decades he was instrumental in bringing scenic photography to the world. Scenic photography has been used to record America’s growth, the power of Yellowstone and the beauty of a cornfield. From black and white photos of immigrants working in mines to landmarks like Devils Tower, it has all been captured by scenic photography.

Photography is the ability to capture a moment in time; scenic photography adds the beauty and strength to the picture.
